Terms of Service

The short version

The road to the first barrier is free: every kana, a first taste of kanji, and the words, readings, meanings, mnemonics and spoken clips that come with them. Past the barrier a plan keeps the road open. You can cancel whenever you like, nothing you have earned is ever taken away, and if you change your mind within 14 days we refund you in full. The rest of this page is the same thing said carefully.

Who you are dealing with

EdoQuest is operated by SunForest BV, a company registered in Belgium. Enterprise number 0792.393.691, VAT BE 0792.393.691 - the registered office is on file with the Belgian Crossroads Bank for Enterprises under that number.

Email admin@edoquest.com. It reaches the team rather than an individual, and it is the fastest way to us.

Your account

One account per person. You are responsible for what happens under it, so set a password and an email address - an account created without them lives only in a browser cookie, and clearing that cookie or changing device loses it along with everything you have earned. Your display name and study statistics are public at edoquest.com/u/yourname; your email never is. Choose a display name you are happy for strangers to read.

The barrier 関所せきしょ

An account costs nothing and needs no card. The road is free as far as the barrier at level 10: kana first, then kanji and the words they open, with every reading, meaning, mnemonic, spoken clip and stroke order attached to them. The barrier is a level and nothing else - it does not ask which characters you are holding when you reach it, and how fast you get there is yours to decide.

At the barrier a plan is needed to unlock new material. Nothing already unlocked is ever taken away: your cards, your progress, your companion, your streak and your place on the ranking board stay yours, and you can go on reviewing everything you have without paying anything, for as long as you like.

EdoQuest+ 極きわみ

$5 per month or $39 per year, charged in US dollars, renewing automatically until you cancel. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for - we do not cut you off early, and we do not bill you again. You can cancel at any time from your account page, which opens Stripe's billing portal; no email or phone call is required.

What it carries is the road past the barrier at level 10, and a second unlock every day: the same handful twice, six kanji in a day rather than three. Everything else in EdoQuest is free: the mnemonics, the spoken clips, the rest at the springs, both lanes of every season pass.

Nothing is repossessed when a subscription ends. Mon, gear, pets, backdrops, ranks and progress you earned while subscribed stay yours, and every card you have unlocked goes on coming back for review. What stops is new material past the barrier and the doubled daily unlock.

Founder 開祖かいそ

$129 once, no subscription, nothing to renew or cancel. It grants every EdoQuest+ feature, including ones added later, for as long as EdoQuest operates. We say that plainly rather than promising “forever”: if we ever had to shut the service down we would give as much notice as we could and let you export your data, but we cannot honestly promise a service will outlive us.

Changing your mind - 14 days

As an EU consumer you have a statutory right of withdrawal. We do not ask you to waive it and we do not pro-rate it: within 14 days of any payment (a first subscription, a renewal, or the Founder seal), email us and we refund it in full, without asking why. After 14 days a subscription can still be cancelled at any time; it simply is not refunded for the period already running.

Payment

Payments are handled by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe and never touch EdoQuest - we store only a customer reference and which plan you are on. Prices are shown in US dollars and include VAT where it applies, so the figure you see is the figure you pay; your bank may apply its own conversion. An invoice for every payment is available from your account page.

What we will not do

We will not run advertising, sell your data, or take away something you have already earned. A plan opens the road ahead; it never closes a door behind you, and it never buys an advantage over another traveler. These are constraints we hold ourselves to, not marketing.

Fair use

Use EdoQuest to learn Japanese. Do not scrape it, automate it, resell it, or attempt to reach other people's accounts. The kanji, vocabulary and example sentences come from openly licensed sources; the artwork, writing and code are ours and are not yours to redistribute. We may suspend an account that is clearly being abused, and we will tell you why.

Changes, and the service ending

EdoQuest is under active development, so features move and improve. If we change these terms materially we will note it here with a new date and tell subscribers by email before it takes effect; if you dislike the change you may cancel and, within 14 days, be refunded. If we ever discontinue the service we will give notice and provide a way to export your progress.

The legal bit

EdoQuest is provided as it is. We work hard to keep it running and accurate, but we do not warrant that it is uninterrupted or error-free, and we are not liable for indirect loss. Nothing here limits your statutory rights as a consumer, which always take precedence over anything written above. Belgian law applies and the courts of Belgium have jurisdiction, without depriving you of the protections of your own country's consumer law. You may also use the European Commission's online dispute resolution platform.
